What to do in the event of an accident
Consider the steps to take after an accident

Stay Calm & Remain at the Scene
Stop the vehicle after impact and remain calm. Stay at the scene and avoid any arguments.

Check for Injury
Check yourself and your passengers for injury. Call emergency services (999) if anyone has been injured.

Deciding whether to move your car
If the accident is minor, move all cars out of the flow of traffic if safe to do so. If the vehicle cannot be moved switch on the car’s hazard warning lights if it is safe to do so, stand somewhere safe until help arrives.

Report Accident
Report the accident to the Gardaí providing details of the location, if any persons were injured and vehicle damage. If the Gardaí do not attend the scene they will still record the incident.

Exchanging motoring details — Legal Obligation
If other drivers are involved in the accident you will need to exchange the following information:
— Name, address, phone number
— Insurance company and policy number
— Driver’s license and vehicle licence plate number
If the driver is not the owner of the vehicle you will need to get the owners contact details also.

Document the Scene
Take pictures (provided it is safe to do so) — with camera/ cellphone of the following: Position of vehicles and damage to vehicles Diagram scene Collect any witness details who may have seen the accident: name, contact information.

Call your Insurance Company / Vehicle Body Repairer
If making a claim, understand your policy cover. You will be required to complete an accident report and submit an estimate. Tell your insurer /vehicle body repairer about the car accident as soon as you can. Failure to do so within the time period set out in your policy may invalidate your cover. Get an estimate from your vehicle body repairer before commencing repairs.

Right to Choose
You have the right to choose a Vehicle Body Repairer to undertake repairs to your car. An insurance company may recommend their approved repairers however you’re always free to choose any repairer. All costs must be agreed in advance with your insurer.

Standards for Repairs
Ask your insurance company or repairer if the company is CSS certified?
CSS (Certified Steel Standard) is the Irish National Standard programme for the structural repair of accident damaged cars created by SIMI, (the Society of the Irish Motor Industry). Visit www.cssrepair.ie Vehicle Body Repair Companies obtain the Standard through an independent annual audit.

Recovery
If your vehicle has to be towed away contact an SIMI Vehicle Recovery Operator or your insurance company may arrange recovery.

Schedule an Inspection for an Estimate
The damage to your vehicle needs to be inspected to determine the cost of repairs. In some cases the insurance company may send out an assessor depending on the level of damage or the repairer will submit an estimate of the work to the insurance company for approval if your vehicle is subject to an

Your insurance company’s claim handler will review all the information to help determine fault and then provide a cost estimate. Check the excess you have to pay yourself on your policy as the amount varies.

Once your claim has been filed, coverage determined, your insurer will process your claim and will confirm if you are covered so you can consent to have your car repaired.
